| On February 6th & 7th 2002 Post 6873 sponsored a Community Service Project consisting of a Patriotism Seminar for the Tannahill Intermediate School in the White Settlement Independent School District on the west side of Fort Worth. VFW District 21 was invited to participate. VFW District 21 Adjutant Jim Dymond observed a couple of sessions on day one. The Tannahill Intermediate School has an enrollment of approximately 750 students all in the 5th & 6th grades. Roy Ator was the Veterans Speaker Coordinator for this project. On Wednesday, the first day scheduled, school opening was delayed by one hour due to winter weather conditions. The first class that had been scheduled was able to attend one of the presentations on the second day. All students were involved! During "breaks" the veterans visited the Special Education students and the Behavioral [In School Suspension or ISS] classes. 100% coverage for the student body was achieved. The program presentations were made in forty-five minute sessions in the gymnasium during their regular allotted Physical Education (PE) period. Coach Lacy Phillips was the primary point of contact. Coordination had been agreed with Principal Audrey Arnold. Through the Public Affairs Office of NAS JRB Carswell Field, Fort Worth several active duty Navy personnel were obtained as volunteers to participate. Handouts included a Flag Etiquite pamphlet, a Questions and Answers on the United States Flag booklet, Pledge of Allegiance pencils and Buddy Poppies. Several photos of this program follows. |
