Over the last decade, we have seen a significant
decrease in the number of Posts in our organization.
Many Posts that have thrived in the past are
failing and face closure or consolidation today.
It’s time for members of those Posts to consider how
they got where they are today.
Consider the following tongue-in-cheek
observations of Russell Dramstad, a longtime Post
quartermaster and past Department commander.
How to Run Your Post into the Ground
Ø
Don’t attend Post meetings.
Ø
If
you do attend, arrive late.
Ø
When
attending, find fault with the work being done by
the officers and other members.
Ø
Never accept an office, as it is easier to criticize
others than to do things yourself.
Ø
Get
sore if you are not appointed to a committee; but if
you are appointed, don’t attend any committee
meetings.
Ø
If
you are asked by the commander to give your opinion
on some important matter, tell him you have nothing
to say. After the meeting, tell everyone how it
should have been done.
Ø
Do
nothing to help the Post, but when other members
roll up their sleeves and help to get things done,
point out that the organization is run by a clique.
Ø
Hold
back your dues as long as possible.
Make someone give their time chasing you down
to get them.
Ø
Don’t try to recruit new members. Let the commander
or others do it.
Ø
When
a dinner is held, tell everyone that money is being
wasted on blowouts that accomplish nothing.
Ø
When
no dinners are held, say the Post is dead.
Ø
Agree with everything said in a meeting, but
disagree with everything as soon as you are outside.
Ø
Get
all the Post can give you, but give nothing to the
Post in return.
If this sounds familiar to you, it’s not too late to
turn the tide and save your Post.
